SUBSIDIARITY, INNOVATION, SUPPORT TO THE NON PROFIT SECTOR
Fondazione Cariplo, amongst the most relevant philanthropic entities in the world, follows in the long term tradition of the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, WITH an asset base that has been built in more than 180 years of history.
Since 1991 – when it was incorporated – Fondazione Cariplo has supported over 25 thousands projects undertaken by non profit entities, for a total amount of 2,8 billion euros. Relevant amounts that prove the commitment of Fondazione Cariplo in all the sectors in which it operates: as an example, in 2013 the area Social Services for Individuals in Need was awarded 41% of total contributions, whereas the Art and Culture area was awarded 32%, Scientific Research received 19% and Environment 8% of total amounts, with the residual amount being awarded to other areas.
A precious resource to help social entities and civil society to better serve their communities
Fondazione Cariplo main aim is subsidiarity, meaning it doesn’t wish to take the place of other players, both public and private; on the contrary, it wishes to anticipate the future, finding new solutions to problems that other players cannot or to not manage to tackle. The role of Fondazioen Cariplo is therefore that of intermediate player in a complex society, between public and private, with the capability of facing unmet challenges.
Fondazione Cariplo currently funds each year approximately one thousand projects that, based on the evaluation of requests submitted, are in line with the guidelines that define all funding activities.
An ever growing support to the local communities
Having always paid attention to the requests of local communities, Fondazione Cariplo is engaged in the support to local development in its geographical area, that is Lombardy and the provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.
In the past five years the total amount of funding provided has been constant notwithstanding the financial crisis; it has actually increased in sectors such as Scientific Research and Environment that in the past had received less funding. This as tangible proof of the constant commitment of Fondazione Cariplo in supporting the third sector.
Furthermore, Fondazione Cariplo has launched a number of initiatives aimed at structuring valuation processes for the projects it funds; this is an innovative process for Foundations and it is a very important instrument to evaluate the impact of all funded initiatives and define future strategies.
Fondazione Cariplo has undertaken in recent year a modernisation process: today Fondazione Cariplo has clearly defined and up to date strategies, has young and specialized personnel and instruments apt at launching initiatives of modern philanthropy to provide a future for ideas.
From strategy to action: four areas, three main aims
To better answer to its stakeholders needs, Fondazione Cariplo has defined four main areas of intervention, that refer to specific departments: Environment, Art and Culture, Scientific Research and Technological Transfer, Social Services for individuals in Need.
For the years 2014 – 2016, Fondazione Cariplo has defined three strategic priorities that will guide its activities: youth empowerment, strengthening of local communities through cohesion, welfare and social innovation and support to wellbeing, in its broader meaning of quality of life in all dimensions, physical, social and environmental with a special focus on aging and fragile people. Fondazione Cariplo commitment in the coming years will
