Intercultural walk in Porta Venezia, Milan

22 June 2015 by Redazione

Intercultural walk in MilanACRA-CCS organizes an intercultural urban walk in the area of Porta Venezia, close to Corso Buenos Aires and the city centre.

The guided walk will give the participants the opportunity to visit various historical places, shops, and bars, recounting the story of one of the most lively and interesting neighbourhood of Milan.

The district has a long history of foreign immigration and has developed over the last five decades as one of the multi-ethnic areas of Milan, to the point that it is sometimes referred to as Milan’s “African district” or Milan’s casbah. Another specific trait of Porta Venezia is the number of night life venues, such as restaurants (many of them started by immigrants and serving African, Asian, or South American cuisine) and “trendy” and underground, LBGT venues in Milan.

On top of that, Porta Venezia houses the remains of the “Lazzaretto”, a massive rectangular cloister-like 15th-century leprosarium, cited in the famous Italian novel “I Promessi Sposi” by Alessandro Manzoni.

During the walk, your guide will enlighten you with some favourite local stories and intriguing history surrounding this district. You will also have the opportunity to have a nice “happy hour” in the area and an Eritrean dinner in one of the first such restaurants in Milan.
